The Day Endorses
Christopher Coutu in the 47th District
Democratic Rep. Jack Malone is seeking an
eighth consecutive term representing the
47th House District that includes Lisbon,
Scotland, Sprague and parts of Norwich. He
faces a determined and energetic challenger
in City Council Alderman Christopher Coutu.
Rep. Malone's failure in July to attend a
critical meeting of the Continuing
Legislative Committee on Planning and
Development is cause for concern... Rep.
Malone, away on vacation, missed the meeting
notice...
If Chris did not run, there
would be no accountability
Based on his campaign efforts and
attitude, Mr. Coutu would be a hard worker
for the district. He quickly got the
signatures and funding necessary to qualify
for public campaign financing. The Coutu
signs covering the district attest to the
serious effort he is making.
Mr. Coutu is a self-described fiscal
conservative, though he is short on details
about exactly what spending he would cut.
Yet Mr. Coutu has a realistic expectation
about what new spending the state will be
able to afford in the current economic
environment - not much.
In a legislature now dominated by the
Democratic Party, opposing voices for fiscal
discipline are necessary to provide for
balanced debate. With that in mind, and
convinced that he will work tirelessly for
the district, The Day endorses Christopher
Coutu in the 47th District.
Most importantly, Chris will
hold Hartford accountable. He will challenge
Hartford's Tax and Spend ideology and focus
on results based accountability. Most
importantly he has no connections with the
establishment and will work for the people,
not special interests or the status quo.
