Coutu qualifies for cash
Norwich -
Christopher Coutu, Republican candidate for
the 47th District state representative seat,
has qualified for a $25,000 state public
campaign grant by raising the required
$5,000 match from at least 150 donors.
Coutu will
challenge incumbent Democrat Jack Malone in
the district that covers Scotland, Sprague
and part of Norwich.
The
Citizens' Election Program, administered by
the state Elections Enforcement Commission,
offers grants totaling $25,000 to qualifying
House of Representatives candidates who have
raised the $5,000 matching share.
The
candidates must agree to limit spending to
no more than $30,000 - the grant plus the
$5,000 match. Any additional funds raised
must be turned back to the state to be added
to the Citizens Election Fund, said Nancy
Nicolescu, communications director for the
commission.
Malone also
has filed a notice of intent to abide by the
expenditure limits and other program rules,
but has not yet applied for the grant,
Nicolescu said. The application deadline is
Sept. 25.
