Coutu Responds to Malone’s Residency
Accusations
NORWICH- Christopher Coutu, Republican
candidate for state representative in the 47th House
District, today responded to unfounded assertions by incumbent
Democratic State Representative Jack Malone concerning his district
residency.
In Saturday’s Norwich Bulletin, Malone
questioned if Coutu could in fact seek the 47th district
seat while not a resident of the district. “I have a huge problem
if he is allowed to run from his Yantic Street address. It is a
given that you run from the district you live in. If the Republican
Party and the election committee didn’t tell him he had to live in
the district, I will be on the phone Monday to ask for a ruling.”
Malone said.
“State law is clear in stating that a candidate
need only live in the district he or she runs in on the day he is
sworn into office,” Coutu said. “I have requested the State
Elections Enforcement Commission for a written conformation
validating this fact.”
Coutu, a Norwich City Councilman who’s home
residence was Taftville for 30 years and lives mere blocks from the
district border, will be moving back to Taftville soon, where he has
volunteered as a firefighter for ten years.
“I think we should wonder why Jack Malone,
after fourteen years in the legislature, is unfamiliar with some of
the basic laws we send him to Hartford to vote on,” said Coutu.
“Eliminating this kind of disconnect is one of the many reasons I am
seeking election to the House of Representatives.”
Coutu also noted that it was interesting to him
that Malone was so animated in his objection to Coutu running at
all. “In America we encourage debate and an open political process
that encourages qualified candidates with ideas to seek office.
That’s the America I am proud to serve.” said Coutu.
“It’s also very important to remember that the
47th district encompasses four towns. I love my hometown,
but I also have a strong desire to be an advocate for the people of
Canterbury, Scotland and Sprague as well.”
Coutu will officially announce his candidacy
for the 47th district at 3:00 p.m. on April 12th
at the VFW Post 594.
The 47th district includes the
Norwich, Scotland, Sprague and Canterbury.
